Frequently Asked Questions

Please Note: CHEWIGEM® jewellery is NOT suitable for children under 36 months , due to long cord, strangulation risk.

How long will the necklace last?

This is very difficult to answer.  We would hope that if you or your child is mild- moderate in their chewing, you will get  from 4-12 weeks of use from your Chewigem. However, we have seen some people destroy them in a few days while for others, they last 8 or 9 months.

It will depend on the pendant you choose and how that works with you or your child’s particular chewing style.

Do they chew all day? A few hours a day? Only at anxious events? All of those factors affect how long a Chewigem will last.

get in touch and we will do our best to guide you –  we strive to help everyone choose the most suitable Chewigem.

The chewelry is hard wearing, but will tear, break and dent in time. Chewigems are all made of exactly the same silicone but each design can  vary in its likelihood to become damaged. This is affected by the finish and shape. It will depend on the aggression and style of the chewer. Our customers tell us that they or their children all have a favorite and a Chewigem which is stronger for one person, may not be for the next. For example, one person may destroy a button in a few days, but the dog tags will last months.  Another person may find the opposite. We have also found that Chewigem help regulate the need to chew. Some even choose to have 2 chews. One softer more sensory and springy pendant for when they are calm and a second tougher pendant for times of great anxiety and stress where chewing increases.

Once damaged, the necklace should be discarded and replaced. The breakaway clasp and cord are NOT for chewing and are purely to hold the necklace in place. If you think that you or your child will chew the clasp then this product may not be suitable and you would be better with a bangle. We strongly recommend not to pull on the cord HARD while the pendant is being chewed as this puts force on the stringing hole which is the weakest point of the necklace and could cause it to break.

Breakaway clasp

Our  breakaway clasps provide additional comfort and safety and are set to break apart at approximately 2.3 KG’s of pressure (5 lbs).

Is it wrong to "encourage" children to chew?

CHEWIGEM® will no doubt split opinion, just like babies’ pacifiers. Some individuals will be happy with this concept, safe in the knowledge that they or their child is chewing something that cannot harm them.  Others may disagree strongly. We are not here to say which is right or wrong, that is for you to decide.  The feedback that we have had confirms there is a definite need for this product.

How long will my order take to arrive?

Items in stock and ordered before 2 pm will be mailed the same day Monday- Friday (excluding holidays). Then it’s in the hands of Canada Post.

Is it safe?

Yes. The silicone we use meets the same standards as any product which is suitable for chewing or sucking.  Due to the fact that chewing will cause damage to these items, please remember that this product should be used with supervision.

Where are they made?

All 0f our pieces are designed by Chewigem in Scotland. When Chewigem started out, they were proud to have them manufactured in the UK. However, a few years ago they made the business decision to move production to China.

One thing that was extremely important to Chewigem was ensuring that our chosen factory met our strong ethics surrounding human rights and quality standards.

We have a firm quality control agreement in place with the factory and it does not only meet our standards, it often exceeds them.

Do we own our own factory? What are your Ethical and Quality Controls?

Like many brands (from Apple to Nike) we source our products from countries overseas and as such we do not own the companies or the factories that make our products.

However, we do have a strong sense of responsibility to the workers in those factories, our directors and of course our customers.

We have a strict code of conduct which has been agreed between us and the factory. We have an agreement which is based on the ETI (Ethical Trading initiative) base code and so is compliant with the ILO (International Labor Organization). This covers items such as safe and hygienic working conditions, a living wage, fair treatment, no child labor, reasonable working hours, no discrimination etc.

On top of that, we have a very strict quality control agreement with the factory ensuring that our high standards are met.

Both of the above can give you total peace of mind that you are buying a high quality product from an ethical organization, that  ensures tight control over quality and ethics occurs at all times.

Our commitment to safety

We know that when it comes to our children, safety is so very important. As such we have secured the CE mark against the required Toy standards for the bangles. This is probably a bit extreme, as they are not toys but this seemed the most robust test. We have also carried out toxicity and bite tests on our products.

We only use silicone which is approved and suitable for baby teethers. It is a food safe, medical grade silicone and is free from all the harmful chemical properties to meet this standard.

How Green are you?

We do our best to be as Green as can be. All of the plastics in our packaging are made of recycled plastics. Silicone itself is a naturally occurring organic compound .

Even in our offices we try to be paperless when we can and use cloud based systems. Our products are also produced in a factory which is environmentally and socially responsible.
